Whole School Curriculum
The teaching of reading, writing, mathematics and communications skills are essential components for all our children to ensure we provide the best possible outcomes for their future.
Our classes are taught using a creative curriculum approach, where there are many opportunities for cross curricular links with foundation subjects with an emphasis on core skills running through each topic.
For children in the Foundation Unit, learning is accessed through a range of indoor and outdoor activities.
Typically, morning sessions in school focus on the discrete teaching of phonics, grammar, spelling, punctuation and writing. This continues with mathematics, working on understanding and the development of core knowledge and specific skills sets. These skills can then be developed and used and applied by the children in a range of contexts.
Afternoons follow a cross curricula topic approach where skills can be used to extend individual children’s progress in reading, writing and mathematics through subjects such as scientific enquiry, art and design, history, geography, design and technology, RE, ICT, and PE.
Current Reading and Phonics Schemes – Our reading scheme in KS1 includes Big Cat Phonics, Collins Big Cat and Oxford Reading Tree. Our phonics programme is based upon the DFE ‘Letters and Sounds’ framework and jolly phonics.
